WHAT IS LIFE SERIES?

HONOURING OTHERS

Honour

Definition: Thoughts of high esteem in the absence of another.

Why is honour important?

A. God’s Intention – People are important to God

  • as they are the crown of God’s creation
  • as God gave up His Son for people
  • as God did everything to redeem them – through the life of God’s Son
  • as they are the crown of God’s creation

1. The high esteem of God towards man

What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? Psalm 8:4-8

2. Man is in God’s heart

And Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.” Exodus 19:3-6

3.  God gave up His Son for man / mankind

21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21

B. God’s Command

1. Command to honour parents

12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

2. Command to love others

27 So he answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’[a] and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’[b]

3. Command to forgive others

14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 6:14,15

C. God’s Unconditional Love

34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” And they divided His garments and cast lots. Luke 23:34

Why can’t man love one another?
1. Deceitfulness of sin
13 but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. Hebrews 3:13
2. Harden hearts
Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness, Hebrews 3:8
Antidote to man to man relationship
1. Love unconditionally
14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 6:14,15
2. Honour all people

17 Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king. 1 Peter 2:17

1. Do we have the right to dishonour when God loves?

2. We don’t have the right to hold anyone at captive despite their effect on us

3. Our entrance to God depends on our honouring of other man
