VICTORIOUS LIVING

“Pride comes before a fall, humility comes before glory.” Rev. George Varughese

“Self humility first, submission to God foremost, keys to a victorious life” Rev. George Varughese

Warfare Series

James 4:7

Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

29/9 4.05 am

A. How then we should live?

1. Victorious Living

  • Saviour based living
  • Scripture based living
  • Spirit based living

2. Victorious Thinking. To appropriate Jesus victory.

3. Victorious Posture.

4. Victorious Action. WWJD what would Jesus do?

B. How then we should not live?

1. Satan syndrome. Life conscious of Satan

2. Sin syndrome. Life conscious of sin

3. Slave syndrome. Living with a defeated mindset

Key Lessons for a Victorious Life

1. Destructive power of pride

pride: exaltation of self and self agenda for self glory

  • (a) cause of strive among brethren. cannot live in peace James 4:1
  • (b) cause of violence among brethren. murder and covet James 4:2
  • (c) life lived apart from God. James 4:2,3
    • selfish prayers or
    • no prayer
  • (d) life lived in self gratification. friendship with the world James 4:4

Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet[a] you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. Adulterers and[b] adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”? James 4:1-5

2. Embrace God-humility – Antidote to defeated life of pride

humility: life lived by lowering self and self interest and promoting God interest and interest for others

  • God’s verdict
    • God abhors proud but graces the humble James 4:6
  • Self submission to God. Not an impulsive decision but a thought through, committed decision James 4:7,8
  • Repentant lives
    • repent from sin
    • by repentant attitude – purifying heart
    • Godly sorrow
  • Life of victory from self James 4:10
  • Life of victory from satan James 4:10

But He gives more grace. Therefore He says:

“God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble.”[c]

Humility Cures Worldliness

Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. James 4:1-10

GOD’S MESSAGE: 15/9/17 7.34 pm

1. Anointing comes when the Anointed One comes John 20:31

JESUS IS THE ANOINTED ONE

(A) JESUS:

  1. Yahweh saves” (or “Yahweh is salvation”).
  2. His human name, as the incarnate, eternal Son of God (Mt 1:21,25, see also Lk 1:31)

Scripture 1:

36 The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ—He is Lord of all— 37 that word you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. Acts 10:3-38

  • English: Jesus Christ Acts 10:38
  • 2424. Iésous Ἰησοῦς, οῦ, ὁ
  • Jesus; the Greek form of Hebrew Joshua; Jesus, son of Eliezer; Jesus, surnamed Justus.
  • HELPS Word-studies

  • 2424 IēsoúsJesus, the transliteration of the Hebrew term, 3091/ Lṓt (“Yehoshua”/Jehoshua, contracted to “Joshua”) which means Yahweh saves” (or “Yahweh is salvation”).

  • “Jesus Christ” is properly “Jesus the Christ.” “Jesus” (2424/Iēsoús) is His human name, as the incarnate, eternal Son of God (Mt 1:21,25, see also Lk 1:31) – the Christ, the divine Messiah (the second Person of the holy Trinity).

  • [Christ (His title) means “the Anointed One” (the eternal pre-incarnate, Logos, Jn 1:1-18).]

Scripture 2:

(B) CHRIST

  1. Anointed One; the Messiah, the Christ.
  2. 5547 Xristós (from 5548 /xríō, anoint with olive oil”)

31 But these are written that you may believe[a] that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. John 20:31 (NIV)

31 but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is [a]the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name. John 20:31 (NASB)

  • English: is the Christ John 20:31
  • 5547. Christos Χριστός, οῦ, ὁ
  • Anointed One, the Messiah, the Christ
  • Definition: Anointed One; the Messiah, the Christ.
  • HELPS Word-studies
  • 5547 Xristós (from 5548 /xríō, “anoint with olive oil”) – properly, “the Anointed One,” the Christ (Hebrew, “Messiah“).

2. Anointing is released / activated by spiritual father

– Elijah released his anointing to Elisha 2 Kings 2:11,12

Criteria:

  • Followership.
    • Elisha followed Elijah at any cost.
  • Submission.
    • Elisha heeded to his master at all cost
  • Tenacity in the spirit.
    • (Action) Never gave up. Elisha did not allow anything to stop in the way. Even when his master refused 2 Kings 2:4,6,10
      •  4 Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here, Elisha; the Lord has sent me to Jericho.” And he replied, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So they went to Jericho. 2 Kings 2:4
      • Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here; the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.” And he replied, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them walked on. 2 Kings 2:6
      • 10 “You have asked a difficult thing,” Elijah said, “yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours—otherwise, it will not.” 2 Kings 2:10
  • Boldness in the spirit.
    • (Reason) Vengeance. Tiveram to get the anointing. Is a posture in the spirit. 2 Kings 2:9
      • When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?” “Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied. 2 Kings 2:9
  • Protocol of the spirit.
    • Elisha had to catch the mantle while he saw Elijah taken up. 2 Kings 2:10
      • 10 “You have asked a difficult thing,” Elijah said, “yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours—otherwise, it will not.” 2 Kings 2:10
  • Execution in the spirit.
    • Immediately God gave him order to split the sea. 2 Kings 2:13
      • 13 Elisha then picked up Elijah’s cloak that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan.

3. Anointing connects us to Jesus the Anointed One

The God of Elijah became the God of Elisha. 2 Kings 2:14

14 He took the cloak that had fallen from Elijah and struck the water with it. “Where now is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” he asked. When he struck the water, it divided to the right and to the left, and he crossed over. 2 Kings 2:14

The Way Forward:

  • Gods anointing is not for show!
  • Gods anointing is for duty!
  • Gods anointing is to serve!
  • God has anointed me to preach good news. Isaiah 61:1

LIVING ACCURATELY IN AFFLUENCE

“Don’t play with fire and expect not to be burnt.” Rev. George Varughese

“To live in sin is to sleep with the devil.” Rev. George Varughese

Warfare Series

1 Corinthians 10:13

Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.”[a] Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell; nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; 10 nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer. 11 Now all[b] these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. 14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 15 I speak as to wise men; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? 17 For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread. 18 Observe Israel after the flesh: Are not those who eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? 19 What am I saying then? That an idol is anything, or what is offered to idols is anything? 20 Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons. 22 Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He? 1 Corinthians 10:1-22

Background of Corinth

  • A Greek city-state
  • Strategic location for commerce
  • Favoured economic boom
  • Money attracted people from the East and West
  • Became a melting pot of religion
  • West: Roman
    • laws, culture and rligion
  • East: Egypt and Asia
    • mystery cults
  • Vice and religion religion flourished
    • Corinthians came from the word korinthiazo = to act like a Corinthian = to commit fornication
  • Paul’s Corinth was the New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas of the ancient world (ISBE)

flee from idolatry; (Gills) 1 Corinthians 10:14

  • the apostle’s meaning is, not only that they would not worship idols, or commit plain downright acts of idolatry;
  • but that they would stand at the greatest distance from idols, not so much as go into an idol’s temple, and there sit down and eat; which if not a real act of idolatry, had at least the show of one;
  • and his sense is, that they would abstain from all appearance of idolatry, from every occasion of it, and whatsoever led unto it;
  • particularly he means, that they would not eat of things sacrificed to idols as such, and in an idol’s temple; which he considers as a species of idolatrous worship, and by a similar instance he after proves it to be so, even a partaking of the table of devils.

Key Lessons:

1. Affluence attracts sinful life: vices (promiscuous) and idolatrous life

  • a reminder lest we get into the trap

2. Don’t let success lea you astray from God

  • to make you make you to live independent of God
  • to lure you to live a sinful life

3. Don’t let success cause you to have pride

12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 1 Corinthians 10:12

Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18

4. To live in sin is to sleep with the devil and to get trapped with demonic influence

14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 1 Corinthians 10:14

  • to live in the status quo is attractive
  • but what comes with it is a life of sin
  • dominated by demonic forces
  • thus to live apart from God and God-life

5. God delivers us from human temptation

13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. 1 Corinthians 10:13

6. God may allow affliction to stay with us for us to depend on Him

13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. 1 Corinthians 10:13

  • for God does not always think fit to remove at once an affliction or temptation, though at the earnest request of his people,
  • as in the case of Paul, 2 Corinthians 12:7 yet he gives them grace sufficient to endure and stand up under it, yea, to get the victory of it, to be more that conquerors, and triumph over it. (Gills)

And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 12:7-9

7. We cannot live a dualistic life / worldly life

  • (A) a life of idolatry
  • a life of worshipping idols in temples
  • a life of partaking in idol worship
  • a life of living idolatrous life / praxis of religion

21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons. 22 Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He? 1 Corinthians 10:21-22

  • (B) a worldly life
  • to mix Christian life with worldly sinful life
  • though grace abounds but for a limited time only

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Romans 6:1-2

26 Sept 2017-FIGHT THE RIGHT FIGHT-Warfare Series-Rev. George Varughese

FIGHT THE RIGHT FIGHT

“Don’t waste your energy fighting the wrong fight.” Rev. George Varughese

Warfare Series

Ephesians 6:12

12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age,[a] against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

1. Our battle is a battle of the spirit

2. This battle happens in our natural lives when we are opposed by man-man level

  • every strife that happens against man

3. This battle happens in our natural lives when we are opposed by satan-man level

  • spiritual battles when persons yield to the tactics of satan

4. Besides resolving conflicts naturally by psychology and human persuasion

5. So we must battle accurately in the spirit

6. By putting on the whole armour of God and stand

13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints— 19 and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. Ephesians 6:13-30

Background:

1. The existence of the spiritual world / kingdom

2. The existence of wars in the spiritual world

(a) God’s kingdom

Apostle Paul encountered a man caught up in the third heavens who was himself in the spirit self

2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago—whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows—such a one was caught up to the third heaven. And I know such a man—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows— how he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter. 2 Corinthians 12:2-4

And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure.  2 Corinthians 12:7

God appeared as a man of war in the spirit world in the context of war

13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a Man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, “Are You for us or for our adversaries?” 14 So He said, “No, but as Commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, “What does my Lord say to His servant?” 15 Then the Commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, “Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy.” And Joshua did so. Joshua 5:13-15

(b) Satan’s kingdom

Satanic prince, the devil withstood Daniel

13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; and behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left alone there with the kings of Persia. Daniel 10:13

  • by “the prince of the kingdom of Persia”: (Gills)
    • is not to be understood the then reigning king of Persia, Cyrus, or his son Cambyses; who either of them would have been called rather king of Persia;
      • nor were they able to withstand an angel, and such an one as Gabriel; nor is a good angel meant, the tutelar one of this kingdom;
      • for it cannot be reasonably thought that good angels should militate against one another;
    • but an evil angel, either Satan, the prince and god of this world, or one of his principal angels under him, employed by him to do what mischief he could in the court of Persia, against the people of God, the Jews;
    • and with this sense agree the contests ascribed to Satan and the Angel of the Lord concerning Joshua, Zechariah 3:1
      • Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to oppose him. Zechariah 3:1
    • and to Michael and the devil disputing about the body of Moses, Jude 1:9
      • Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” Jude 1:9
    • and to Michael and his angels, and the devil and his angels, warring in heaven, Revelation 12:7,
      • And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, Revelation 12:7
    • but, lo, Michael one of the chief Princes, came to help me; called in the New Testament an Archangel, the Prince of angels, the Head of all principality and power; and is no other than Christ the Son of God, an uncreated Angel; who is “one”, or “the first of the chief Princes” (x), superior to angels, in nature, name, and office; he came to “help” Gabriel, not as a fellow creature, but as the Lord of hosts; not as a fellow soldier, but as General of the armies in heaven and earth, as superior to him in wisdom and strength; and he helped him by giving him fresh counsels, orders, and instructions, which he following succeeded:
    • and I remained there with the kings of Persia; with the king of Persia and his nobles, putting into execution the orders Michael had given him, and so baffled the designs of the evil spirit; and this retarded him from being with the prophet one and twenty days. The Septuagint and Arabic versions very wrongly render the words, “and I left him there with the kings of Persia”; as if Michael was left there by Gabriel, whereas it was just the reverse.

The reality of how Satan the Ruler of this world will be cast out

31 Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. John 12:31

—–REFERENCE—

Sept. 25

The Premise:

1. The nature of the battle of the spirit

12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age,[a] against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12

What it is not?

  • Not a battle against flesh and blood

What it is?

  • Battle against spirits

2. Satan’s tactics

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Ephesians 6:11

  • 3180. μεθοδεία. methodeia
  • schemes / wiles
  • (a way of search after something, an inquiry; a method), scheming, craftiness, deceit.
  • HELPS Word-studies

  • 3180 methodeía (the root of the English term, “method”) – properly, a predictable (pre-set) method used in organized evil-doing (well-crafted trickery).

  • [3180 (methodeía) comes from methodos, a “way of searching after something, an inquiry; a method), scheming, craftiness” (Souter).]

3. Believers posture of battle

  • In whom are we to be to be strong?
    • strong in the Lord
    • what does it mean?
      • we depend on the Lord
      • we depend on the personality of God
      • we depend on all that God says Himself to be
  • In what are we to be strong in?
    • to be strong in God’s might

• To praise God publicly Psalms 51:14,15
