What is the colour of your holiness?” Rev. George Varughese

Isaiah 1:18

Word Study 1: sin

21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21

  • 2 Corinthians 5:21
  • sin
  • 266. ἁμαρτία, ας, ἡ hamartia
  • Definition: prop: missing the mark; hence: (a) guilt, sin, (b) a fault, failure (in an ethical sense), sinful deed.
  • HELPS Word-studies 266hamartía (a feminine noun derived from 1/A “not” and 3313/méros, “a part, share of”) – properly, no-share (“no part of”); loss (forfeiture) because not hitting the target; sin(missing the mark).
  • 266/hamartía (“sin, forfeiture because missing the mark”) is the brand of sin that emphasizes its self-originated (self-empowered) nature – i.e. it is not originated or empowered by God (i.e. not of faith, His inworked persuasion, cf. Ro 14:23).

Word Study 2: holy

  • 1 Peter 1:15
  • holy
  • 40. ἅγιος, ία, ον hagios
  • set apart, holy, sacred
  • HELPS Word-studies 40 hágios – properly, different (unlike), other (“otherness“), holy; for the believer, 40 (hágios) means “likeness of nature with the Lord” because “different from the world.”

    The fundamental (core) meaning of 40 (hágios) is “different” – thus a temple in the 1st century was hagios (“holy”) because different from other buildings (Wm. Barclay). In the NT, 40 /hágios (“holy”) has the “technical” meaning “different from the world” because “like the Lord.”

    [40 (hágios) implies something “set apart” and therefore “different(distinguished/distinct)” – i.e. “other,” because special to the Lord.]

Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth!

For the Lord has spoken:
“I have nourished and brought up children,
And they have rebelled against Me;
The ox knows its owner
And the donkey its master’s crib;
But Israel does not know,
My people do not consider.”

Alas, sinful nation,
A people laden with iniquity,
A brood of evildoers,
Children who are corrupters!
They have forsaken the Lord,
They have provoked to anger
The Holy One of Israel,
They have turned away backward. Isaiah 1:2-4

16 “Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean;
Put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes.
Cease to do evil,
17 Learn to do good;
Seek justice,
Rebuke the oppressor;[a]
Defend the fatherless,
Plead for the widow.

18 “Come now, and let us reason together,”
Says the Lord,
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
They shall be as white as snow;
Though they are red like crimson,
They shall be as wool.
19 If you are willing and obedient,
You shall eat the good of the land;
20 But if you refuse and rebel,
You shall be devoured by the sword”;
For the mouth of the Lord has spoken. Isaiah 1:16-20
