  • Something to do with flower of holiness.
  • The Flower Of Holiness is Jesus
  • Lily of the valley
  • a rose trampled on the ground.
  • Rose of Sharon
  • Jesus became ugly for us to be saved

Scripture 1:Song of Solomon 2:1-2

I am the rose of Sharon,

And the lily of the valleys.

Like a lily among thorns,
So is my love among the daughters. Song of Solomon 2:1-2

Flower depicts:

  • the picture of beauty
  • the picture of holiness
  • yet in its weakness
  • we have to prove this flower in our frailty

Scripture Study 1:

1. Christ is likened to the rose (Gills)

  • Christ may be compared to a rose for its colour and smell;  to the rose for its red colour:
    • and which may be expressive of the truth of his humanity,
    • and of his bloody sufferings in it;
  • and this, with the whiteness of the lily,
    • finishes the description of him for his beauty, Sol 5:10;
    • and for its sweet smell; which denotes the same things for which he is before compared to spikenard, myrrh, and camphire.

2. Believers likened to the lilies, beautiful clothed in the righteousness of God (Matthew Henry)

  • Believers are beautiful, as clothed in the righteousness of Christ;
  • and fragrant, as adorned with the graces of his Spirit;
  • and they thrive under the refreshing beams of the Sun of righteousness.

3. Yet church is likened to lily which has a weak stem

  • The lily is a very noble plant in the East; it grows to a considerable height, but has a weak stem.
  • The church is weak in herself, yet is strong in Him that supports her.

4. The wicked sons and daughters of this world are likened to thorns

  • The wicked, the daughters of this world, who have no love to Christ, are as thorns, worthless and useless, noxious and hurtful.

5. Thorns are also corruption in the flesh

  • Corruptions are thorns in the flesh;

Scripture 2: Isaiah 52:14

 14 Just as many were astonished at you,
So His visage was marred more than any man,
And His form more than the sons of men; Isaiah 52:14

6. The sacrifices Jesus had to go through that disfigured his flesh (Gills)

  • though fairer than the children of men,
  • as he was the immediate workmanship of the divine Spirit, and without sin;
  • yet, what with his griefs and sorrows he bore, and troubles he met with;
  • what with watchings and fastings, with laborious preaching, and constant travelling about to do good;
  • what with sweat and blood, with buffetings and scourgings, never was any man’s face more marred, or his form more altered, than his was.
Key Lessons:
1. Holiness is won rather than it is a right
  • struggles to maintain a life of holiness
  • in the real world of sin

2. Holiness is won by choice

  • an accurate decision to live this way
3. Holiness is not a privilege
  • has to be won and not on silver spoon
  • struggles to win holiness

4. Holiness is acquired by strength

  • though is seems as weakness
  • holiness is acquired in strength

5. Thus holiness marks / stamp of believers strength in Jesus

6. Thus holiness marks / stamp of believers victory in Jesus

  • And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”
  • Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
  • 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake.
  • For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

7. Holiness was acquired by Jesus

21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21

8. Holiness caused Jesus His life

  • his body was marred for us Isaiah 52:14

14 Just as many were astonished at you,
So His visage was marred more than any man,
And His form more than the sons of men; Isaiah 52:14
