A. PRE-REQUISITES FOR MATURITY
Scripture 1:Matthew 9:16-17
16 No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and the tear is made worse. 17 Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.” Matthew 9:16-17
Key Meaning: (5)
1. No old wineskins can contain new wine
- old wineskin are containers with old paradigms
- oppose change
- oppose fresh understanding
- oppose new revelations
- no matter how good intentioned these are, they just can’t flow wth the new because of the limitation of the oldness of their ‘container’, their heart
2. New wineskins can contain new wine
- new wineskin are containers with new paradigms
- welcomes change
- welcomes fresh understanding
- welcomes new revelations
- thus becomes canditates of God’s Holy Spirit for fresh revelations
9 But as it is written:
“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
Nor have entered into the heart of man
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”[a]
10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. 1 Corinthians 2:9-12
3. This refers to the degree of maturity
9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.
11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. 1 Corinthians 13:9-12
4. Different regimes of disciplines required with different levels of maturity
3 You therefore must endure[a] hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4 No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. 5 And also if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. 6 The hardworking farmer must be first to partake of the crops. 7 Consider what I say, and may[b] the Lord give you understanding in all things. 2 Timothy 2:3-7
Compared to the life of a:
- (a) soldier 2 Timothy 2:3
- (b) athlete 2 Timothy 2:5
- (c) farmer 2 Timothy 2:6
5. God requires openness for correction
5 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons:
“My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord,
Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;
6 For whom the Lord loves He chastens,
And scourges every son whom He receives.”[a]
7 If[b] you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? 8 But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid themrespect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. 11 Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Hebrews 12:5-11
B. PROCESS FOR MATURITY
- often the inability of one to ascertain real levels of commitment is a pitfall for greatness
- wishful thinking Christians never progress only remains a dreamer
- these are mental paradigms to be coached by God through the Holy Spirit
- often God uses spiritual leaders as a coach / under-coach
- there is no short cut in spiritual coaching
- there is no short cut in spiritual growth
6 For whom the Lord loves He chastens,
And scourges every son whom He receives.” Hebrews 12:6
