TEACHING:
1. Command to be filled with the Holy Spirit
18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, Ephesians 5:18 (NKJV)
(a) one is wasteful but the other to edify
4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church 1 Corinthians 14:4
2. Jesus’s promised to send the Holy Spirit
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 14:26 (NKJV)
3. Manifestation of the filling of the Holy Spirit
4 And they were all filled [that is, diffused throughout their being] with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues (different languages), as the Spirit was giving them the ability to speak out [clearly and appropriately]. Acts 2:4 (AMP)
4. Result of the filling of the Holy Spirit is the evidence of speaking in other tongues
4 And they were all filled [that is, diffused throughout their being] with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues (different languages), as the Spirit was giving them the ability to speak out [clearly and appropriately]. Acts 2:4 (AMP)
5. The filling must be a constant exercise of a believer
38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. Acts 10:38
8 Then Peter, filled with [the power of] the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of the people [members of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish High Court], Acts 4:8 (AMP)
(a) for daily living
(b) for effective living
6. Believers are filled with the Holy Spirit during prayer / anointing
- one can be filled / touched during prayers which is to fulfil a specific need, like for healing, prophecy
7. But believers must desire to be filled with the Holy Spirit everyday
– but believers must build relationship with the Holy Spirit because He is a Person
7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ John 3:7
8. Fellowships are vital to help us in being filled with the Holy Spirit
13 but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. Hebrews 3:13
19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, Ephesians 5:19
9. The Filing of the Holy Spirt is central to the fulfilment of one’s call in ministry
4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:4
11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills. 1 Corinthians 12:11
10. To live successfully we need the filling of the Holy Spirit
22 You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. John 4:22-23
Reminder

STUDY
Scripture 1: Ephesians 5:18
18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, Ephesians 5:18 (NKJV)
18 Do not get drunk with wine, for that is wickedness (corruption, stupidity), but be filled with the [Holy] Spirit and constantly guided by Him. Ephesians 5:18 (AMP)
- but be filled
- Strong’s 4137L pléroó: to make full, to complete
- Cognate: 4137 plēróō (from plērēs, “be full,” see 4130 /plḗthō) – properly, fill to individual capacity, i.e. to the extent it is “meet” (appropriate). See 4130 (plēthō).
- KJV Lexicon: πληρουσθε verb – present passive imperative – second person
pleroo play-ro’-o: to make replete, i.e. (literally) to cram (a net), level up (a hollow), or (figuratively) to furnish (or imbue, diffuse, influence), satisfy, execute (an office), finish
We see 2 kinds of filling:
(a) Filled with wine
- wine is a physical element
- one has to partake more than one’s threshold to become drunk
- but this is Greek wasteful / what can’t be saved (waste);
(b) Filled with the Holy Spirit
- Holy Spirit is a Person, is God Himself, part of Holy Trinity.
- One has to desire / hunger / want in order to receive and to be filled
- Criteria to be filled:
- attitude of hunger and thirst
- desire of wanting more of God
- Myths:
- (i) Holy Spirit filled believers upon receiving salvation through Jesus Christ. Infilling during baptism of the Holy Spirit
- (i) However believes do not manifest the Person of the Holy Spirit unless he is baptised in the Holy Spirit
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 14:26 (NKJV)
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. John 16:7 (NKJV)
