1. MERCY SEAT

5 and above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail. Heb. 9:5

5 But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unjust who inflicts wrath? (I speak as a man.) Rom. 3:5

• English: mercy seat. 
• Greek ἱλαστήριον hilasterion;
• Strong’s 2435: a sin offering, covering
  • (a) a sin offering, by which the wrath of the deity shall be appeased; a means of propitiation,
  • (b) the covering of the ark, which was sprinkled with the atoning blood on the Day of Atonement.

  • derived from 2433 /hiláskomai, “to propitiate”) – the place of propitiation; the lid of the golden ark (the mercy-seat) where the blood of a vicarious lamb appeased God’s wrath on sin. See also 2434 (hilasmós).

The importance of Mercy Seat is twofold:

• it is the place of the Lord’s revelation of His Word to Moses from the cloud of His presence between the cherubim figures (Ex. 25:22, Num. 7:89)
• the place where blood was sprinkled on the Day of Atonement (Lev. 16)

2. MERCY

13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ Luke 18:13

• English: mercy = propitiating 
• Greek: 2433  /hiláskomai, 
  • (a) I have mercy on, show favor to,
  • (b) trans. with object of sins: I forgive, pardon.

1. The Practical Meaning of Mercy:

1. To be spared from the wrath of God

2. By the blood of Jesus

3. We have been spared / covered from God’s judgement

2. Why Is It Important to be spared from God’s wrath?

1. God’s wrath

• is real
• is God’s anger towards sins
• results in punishment

3. What if we do not have God’s mercy?

• we would have been punished by God either here in this life or afterlife

4. What do we do to receive God’s mercy?

• believe in – the Name of Jesus
• confess in – the Name of Jesus
• accept – Jesus
  • then Jesus will be to us our ‘covering’ / propitioantio from God’s wrath
  • then we become the recent of God’s love

5. What is preventing beliebers to receiving God’s mercy?

• twisted understanding of grace – God’s undeserved favour
