Definition: My Freedom: The position God has given me through Jesus Christ. (July 17, 2017)

1. New position ordained by Jesus Christ

5 Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. (NKJV) Galatians 5:1

5 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. (NIV) Galatians 5:1

• liberty

Old position the original nature of sin of man:

• bondage
• yoke of slavery

2. Governed by faith through Jesus Christ not law

2 Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing. 3 And I testify again to every man who becomes circumcised that he is a debtor to keep the whole law. 4 You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. 5 For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love. Galatians 5:2-6

• natural living governed by law: 2 types of law: circumcision and non circumcision. Galatians 5:6
• spiritual living governed by faith
  • live through Christ by faith Galatians 5:6

Challenge to man:

• not to depend on the law but to depend on grace through Jesus Christ . Galatians 5:1
• if circumcised then he becomes a debtor to the law. Galatians 5:3
• If we depend on law are fallen / estranged from grace. Galatians 5:4
• our modus operandi / way of living is to live by righteousness by faith Galatians 5:5

3. Governed by faith working through love through Jesus Christ 

6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love. Galatians 5:6

• walk of faith
• walk through love
• wrought / made possible by / though Jesus Christ

4. Governed by love the fulfilment of the Law

14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another! Galatians 5:14,15

5. The downside of freedom 

13 For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

• freedom as understood by sinful man – opportunity to sin
