There’s a kind of love most of us have felt slip away at some point — love that depended on a mood, a season, a person staying exactly the way we needed them to be. But 1 John 4:16 points to something else entirely: a love that doesn’t come and go, because it isn’t rooted in feelings at all. It’s rooted in who God is.
“And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.”

This single verse holds two Greek words that quietly reframe what it means to live as a Christian — and they’re worth slowing down for.

Two Words That Change Everything
John writes in the original Greek using two words that carry far more weight than their English translations let on.
Abide — meno (μένω) — means to remain, stay, dwell continually. It’s not a one-time visit. It’s a settled, ongoing home. Meno tells us God’s love isn’t a feeling that comes and goes — it’s a place we’re meant to actually live.
Love — agape (ἀγάπη) — is selfless, sacrificial love that gives without expecting anything back. It’s the same love God showed by sending Jesus (1 John 4:9–10). Agape tells us the love we’re invited into isn’t human affection with all its conditions and limits — it’s God’s own character.
Put those two words together and the verse stops being a nice sentiment and becomes an invitation: you are meant to live inside God’s love the way you live inside your own home — not visiting occasionally, but staying.
Three Truths Worth Building a Life On
1. Know and Rely on God’s Love
Believers aren’t only meant to believe God loves them intellectually — they’re meant to trust and depend on that love. The Christian life is rooted in confidence that God’s love is real and dependable, not in fluctuating feelings or circumstances. That’s the difference between knowing a fact and resting in it.
2. “God Is Love”
This doesn’t mean love is God, or that every feeling we call “love” is automatically divine. It means love is essential to God’s very character. Everything He does — His discipline, His justice, His mercy — flows from and is consistent with His holy, faithful, self-giving nature. God isn’t loving the way a person can be loving on their best day. Love is who He is on every day.
3. Living in Love Shows Fellowship with God
When someone consistently loves others the way God teaches, it demonstrates that they are abiding in God and that His presence is actively at work in them. Love here isn’t merely a feeling — it’s evidence of a genuine relationship with God, an active and sacrificial way of life. John doesn’t let this stay abstract:
“If someone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.”
1 John 4:20–21, NKJV
Love for God and love for people are never separated in Scripture. If one is missing, the other isn’t real yet either.
The Vine Connection
God’s love isn’t just something He does — it’s who He is. Because His nature never changes, His love for His children never runs out. When we abide in that love, we stay connected to Him the way a branch stays connected to a vine (John 15:4–5) — and that closeness naturally produces love for others. You don’t have to manufacture love for people through sheer effort. Stay connected to the source, and the fruit follows.
What This Looks Like This Week
🕊️ Rest, don’t perform. You don’t earn God’s love by being good enough — you already have it. Live from that security, not toward it.
🕊️ Stay close daily. Abiding means daily time in prayer and the Word — not just a Sunday visit.
🕊️ Let it overflow. If you’re truly abiding in God’s love, it will show up in how you treat friends, family, and even the people who are hardest to love.

God’s love isn’t a feeling to chase — it’s a home to live in, and living there changes how you love everyone else.
